Win Predictor
Royal: 49% | Wesley: 51%
Pertinent Question:
Does Royal have a home advantage in this crunch game?
Answer: No.
The game is being played in Colombo, Wesley’s home territory. Havelock Park and Longden Place are not far from “Jurassic Park,” unlike Pallekele or the big clubs in Mount Lavinia.
So, there are no excuses for Wesley to be rated as underdogs based on their defeat against Isipathana, nor should Royal be considered favourites simply because they’re playing in Colombo or beat St. Peter’s last week away from home.
The win predictor is based on an in-depth SWOT analysis, presented in a nutshell.
Royal, with a sublime back three featuring the golden boot of Idris Farook and Nadun Pathirana, has yet to perform like a champion outfit. Their rolling maul has not delivered the expected dividends—disappointing both coach Lewke and the Royal faithful.
Royal’s defence, especially under fringe attack, looks vulnerable. Wesley will aim to exploit that area and create scoring opportunities.
The Royal forwards are not synchronising with the backline as expected. This disconnect was a key reason Trinity kept their try line out of bounds for Royal.
They’ll need to break through Wesley’s defence, which is just as solid as Trinity’s. Royal has also struggled in mauls and rucks. The ball has not been coming out quickly, restricting their three-quarter movements—meandering at best.
While they had an excellent outing against St. Peter’s, looking dominant in the breakdowns and executing pick-and-drives well, only one rolling maul paid off. The rest yielded no results. Royal must play a full 70-minute game. They leaked two tries against St. Peter’s in the final 10 minutes and were saved only because the Peterites lacked a quality place kicker.
Wesley, on the other hand, is excellent in defence, brilliant in attack—but appalling when it comes to infringements and vulnerable to unforced errors. If they falter the way they did against Isipathana, Royal will punish them.
Idris Farook could have a field day with his boot, the Royal back three may string together strong phases, and they could exploit Wesley’s line defence and turn the game around. So watch out, Wesley—Royal looks hungry, with intent to keep their Jurassic pride intact.
This game could go down to the wire if Royal elevates their performance—spreading the ball, maintaining continuity, and stringing together effective phases of play that convert into points.
Tony Amit now updates the win predictor to:
Royal: 52% | Wesley: 48%
He believes Royal will show better intent after their loss to Isipathana—not because of the Green Machine’s superiority, but due to their own infringements and failure to adapt to the new rules, which ultimately cost them the game.
