Sri Lanka Cricket officially announced the squad yesterday for the men’s cricket tournament at the 20th Asian Games, which will be held in Japan.
Sahan Arachchige has been appointed captain of this 15-member squad. The squad includes Sohan de Livera—the best batsman of the recently concluded inter-club first-class T20 tournament—as well as Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, the best bowler (having taken the most wickets), and Sineth Jayawardena, the tournament’s highest run-scorer and Player of the Final.
The tournament is being played in the T20 format, and the Sri Lanka squad includes players who have featured in international T20 matches: Ashen Bandara, Niroshan Dickwella, Chamika Karunaratne, Lasith Croospulle, Nuwanidu Fernando, Dushan Hemantha, Tharindu Ratnayake, Binura Fernando, and Nuwan Thushara. Uncapped players Vanuja Sahan and Garuka Sanketh have also been called up to the squad.
Matches in the preliminary round of the men’s tournament begin tomorrow (24); Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will join the competition starting from the quarter-final stage. Pakistan and Afghanistan (who are participating in the preliminary round) have been placed in Group A, while India and Bangladesh are fielding their national T20 squads for the tournament.
Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Oman will join Afghanistan in the preliminary round, with four of these teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
The Sri Lanka team is scheduled to depart for Japan tomorrow (24) to participate in this tournament.
