The new Sri Lanka Cricket selection committee was appointed by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage yesterday, and Kapila Wijegunawardena has been named as its new chairman. The term of the current chairman of the selection committee, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, will end, and the recommended new selection committee members are Amal Silva, Brendan Kuruppu, Waruna Waragoda and Vanessa de Silva.
The Sports Minister has appointed this five-member committee with effect from yesterday under the provisions of the Sports Act and Extraordinary Gazette Regulations.
This step has been taken amidst the structural changes taking place in the cricket body after the appointment of the Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee.
Kapila Wijegunawardena, 61, started his career at St. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, and played for the CCC team, playing two Tests and 26 ODIs for Sri Lanka as a right-arm fast bowler. He served as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee in 2015 and has also served as a member of the Cricket Technical Advisory Committee of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.
