Sri Lankan athletes Nadeesha Lekamge and Sumedha Ranasinghe clinched Silver medals in women’s and men’s Javelin Throw events at the Asian Throwing Championship held in Makpo, Korea yesterday.
The 38-year-old Olympion Nedeesha from Sri Lanka Army once again came to the fore achieving her seasonal best of 56.79m to finish second to secure silver medal. Two Japanese athletes M.Ueda won gold with 58.84m while M.Tsuji was placed third to grab bronze with a distance of 56.68m. In last year too Nadeeka won the silver at this same meet. At present Nadeeka is the Sri Lanka’s number one women’s javelin thrower. She has represented Paris Olymlics in 2024 and has won 2022 Asian Games silver medal and 2017 Asian Championship silver medal. She was the South Asian gold medalist in 2019 and 2025.
Meanwhile the 35-year-old Olympion Sumedha Ranasinghe who is ranked second in Sri Lanka after Rumesh Tharanga finished with his seasonal best 76.95 m throw to take silver medal in the men’s final. Uzbekistan athlete S.Ismoilov won the gold with a 77.39m throw while Korean athlete T.Nam finished third and bagged bronze with a 76.93m distance performance.
Sumedha Ranasinghe who represented 2016 Rio Olympics is the most experienced javelin thrower and his National Record of 85.78m was erased by present Lankan number one, 23-year-old Rumesh Tharanga who is world number 7 at present.
Both Sri Lankan javelin throwers Nedeesha and Sumedha were accompanied by coach Pradeep Nishantha at this Asian Throwing Championship in Korea.
