The renovation works of A Ratnayaka Stadium in Menikhinna Valala in Kandy district, which produced Olympic medalist Tarushi Karunaratne and international athletes, is being completed and it is ready to be opened in the new year.
As Tharushi Karunaratne has received a scholarship from Tulane University in New Orleans, USA to study sports training and management degree, in the future she will be brought to Sri Lanka to open the stadium.
After Tharushi Karunaratne won the 800m Asian gold medal, the Ministry of Sports and the Central Provincial Council took steps to turn the Valala stadium into a full-fledged stadium according to a request made by the then sports authorities.
The sports authorities who listened to Tarushi’s request allocated one hundred million rupees for the construction of a fully equipped stadium with a 200 meter track.
Apart from that, a fitness center was also built separately for sportsmen at the full cost of Sri Lanka Cricket.
