Sports Minister opens doors for Athletes to qualify for Olympics

Sports Minister Harin Fernando aligning with the Olympic spirit, has instructed the Director General of Sports Rear Admiral Prof Shemal Fernando to provide equal opportunities for Sri Lankan youth to attain qualifications for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, starting on July 26.

As the Cabinet Minister of Sports Harin Fernando will secure special approval from the Cabinet for the innovative programme, “Road to Olympics.” This initiative ensures that Sri Lankan athletes receive all necessary facilities and funding to participate in crucial Olympic Qualifiers and international competitions from January to July 2024, aiming to meet the qualification standards said Sports Director General. Sports Minister already gave instructions to National Sports Council (NSC) headed by Dr Maiya Gunasekara.

Dr. Maiya Gunasekera entrusted the task to the Director General of Sports, Professor (Rear Admiral) Shemal Fernando,Hafeez Marso, Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti and former Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sriyani Kulawansa who have carefully selected 44 top athletes from various sports disciplines.

Meanwhile Sports Minister Harin Fernando has offered an opportunity to those who missed out due to various reasons.
