National Youth Sports Festival helps discover hidden talent

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe and Pasindu Gunaratne, the Director General of the National Youth Services Council, were the chief guest and guest of honor at the 34th National Youth Sports Festival kicked off at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Sayuri Lakshima Mendis, last year’s Best Athlete in the girls’ segment, and BASK Dias, last year’s Best Athlete in the boys’ segment, lit the Olympic torch. Mendis, a bronze medalist in the 2023 Asian Games 4x400m women’s relay and silver medalist in the 2022 Asian Athletic Championship 4X400m women’s relay, was also the 2021 Youth Sports Festival Under-20 Best Athlete. Dias achieved gold in the 2018 National Schools Games 110m Hurdles Under-20 boys, silver in the 2019 Sir John Tarbat Athletic Championship 110m Hurdles, and gold in various other events.

The event was attended by KG Wijesinghe, the Colombo District Secretary, Randula Abeydheera, the President’s Director of Youth Affairs, Lal Chandrasiri, the Director General of Sugathadasa Sports Complex, and RS Wickramaratne, the Air Force Chief of Staff.
