BAN v AFG : ASIA CUP, MATCH 04 – Bangladesh roars back with an 89-run win over Afghanistan

Bangladesh made a strong comeback, defeating Afghanistan by 89 runs in the 2023 Asia Cup in Lahore. After suffering a heavy loss to Sri Lanka in their first match, Bangladesh needed to win this game. They batted first, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring centuries to help Bangladesh post a massive total of 334/5 in 50 overs. Mehidy scored 112(119) before retiring hurt, while Shanto was run out for 104(105). Captain Shakib Al Hasan also contributed with an unbeaten 18-ball 32.

Afghanistan’s response was shaky as Shoriful Islam dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for just 1(7). Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran then steadied the innings with a 78-run partnership before Taskin Ahmed removed Rahmat Shah for 33(57). Ibrahim scored 75(74) before being caught by a one-handed stunner by Mushfiqur Rahim. Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 51(60) before falling to Shoriful. However, Afghanistan’s innings eventually folded for 245 in 44.3 overs, with Rashid Khan being the last batter to be dismissed.
