Chennai Super Kings’ captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl first. For RR, Jos Buttler scored 52 runs off 36 balls with the help of three sixes and one four, while Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Shimron Hetmyer scored 38, 30, and 30 runs respectively. RR posted a target of 175/8 for CSK.
Chasing the target, CSK put up a good fight from start to finish. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja made a valiant effort in the last few overs, but it was not enough for a win. CSK could only manage to score 172/6 in 20 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets each for RR, and they won by just three runs. With this victory, RR took the lead in the points table.
