Sri Lanka Cricket is announcing the squad for the upcoming Twenty20 Cricket World Cup by tomorrow (10).
The ICC Twenty20 World Cup is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14 and the official squad for all teams must be finalized before September 10. Thereafter, any changes in the reserves will be allowed within a period of approximately one month (until October 10).
Representing Group A in the qualifying round, Sri Lanka will face Namibia, the Netherlands and Ireland. Group B includes Bangladesh, Scotland, Oman, and Papua New Guinea.
If Sri Lanka and Bangladesh advance to the Super 12 round of qualifying, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will reserve their seats in the Super 12 round as A1 and B1 respectively.
Accordingly, if Sri Lanka is selected in the Super 12 round, the team that wins second place in Group B of the qualifying round will play against Australia, West Indies, South Africa, and England.
All-rounder Dasun Shanaka will be the captain and middle-order batsman Dhananjaya de Silva will be the vice-captain.
Under Shanaka’s leadership, Sri Lanka won the Twenty20 series against India and the ODI series against South Africa 2-1.
Shanaka’s SLC Greys also won the Dialog-SLC Invitational Twenty20 Cricket Tournament.
Kusal Janith Perera, who has recovered from a COVID-19 virus infection and has resumed training, will join the squad as the opening wicket-keeper.
23-year-old Avishka Fernando has been a very good scorer in recent matches and 24-year-old Charith Asalanka will be instrumental in strengthening the team’s midfield.
At the end of the ODI series against South Africa, Asalanka scored 196 runs in 3 matches and won the man of the match award.
Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera and spinner Wanindu Hasaranga will be the two main bowlers. They will leave for the United Arab Emirates soon after the conclusion of the South African Twenty20 tournament to represent Royal Challengers Bangalore in the remaining matches of this year’s IPL.
As a result, both of them missed the two Twenty20 matches against Oman on October 7 and 9, but they are sure to join the Sri Lanka World Cup squad with a good understanding of the UAE pitches.
