Delhi Capitals Pull Off ’Super Over’ Win Over Sunrisers Hyderabad

The first super over match in the IPL took place on Sunday as Delhi Capitals squeezed through to beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad, after the contest ended with the scores tied at 159 in Chennai.

Needing eight runs to win in the super over the Delhi Capitals got over the line as Rishabh Pant and Shikkar Dawan faced up to Rashid Khan who was given the ball to defend seven runs made by the Sunrisers.

The Sunrises had top scorer Kane Williamson at the crease to get 14 runs in the final over and they ended up unable to post two more runs needed in the final ball in chasing down the 160 target.

Williamson unbeaten on 66 faced the super over bowled by Axar Patel with his captain David Warner and the duo could muster up only seven runs to defend.

Earlier Williamson brought the Sunrises tantalizingly close to the target almost single-handed after they lost the cream of their batting to end up at 136 for 7 with just nine balls left and still needing 24 runs to win.

They suffered two heavy blows losing David Warner run-out for 6 and Jonny Bairstow for 38 before Willianson was made to do the repair job.

Batting first, the Delhi Capitals had their innings revolve around a first wicket stand of 81 runs between Prithvi Shaw (53) and Shikkar Dawan (28) in 10.2 overs.

After their respective exits, the Delhi Capitals motored along through Steven Smith (34 not out) and Rishabh Pant (37) to reach 159 for 4 in the 20 overs.
