Men’s and Women’s Rugby teams of Sri Lanka have drawn to Pool A groups in Asia Rugby Sevens 2019 first leg,which will take place at the Namdong Asiad Ground on 31 August and 1 September.
Sri Lanka Men’s will play alongside Japan, UAE and China while Hong Kong, Philippines, South Korea and Taipei will battle it out in the other group.
In the Women’s segment, Sri Lanka will play alongside Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia while Thailand, China, Kazakhstan and Singapore will play in the other group. Sri Lanka Men’s team under Head Coach Matt Lee will miss the service of some senior players who pulled out due to injury and studies. Meanwhile Sudath Sampath will be in charge of the Women’s outfit.

The Asia Rugby Sevens Series is the premier sevens tournament for rugby in Asia and the member unions. The tournament was first held in 2009 and has been an annual event since, playing a key role in the development of the sport in the region as well as providing a pathway to qualification for World Rugby’s men and women’s series as well as the Olympic Games.
The Asia Rugby Women’s Seven Series runs parallel to the tournament.
In the current format, the tournament features the top eight teams in Asia in both competitions. There are three rounds. There are three rounds starting in Korea (31st Aug – 1st September) followed by China ((14-15 September) and Sri Lanka (28-29 September). The Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy acts as a qualifier for this event.
