National Surfing Championship to be held at Arugam Bay starting on the 10th

Arrangements have been made to hold the National Surfing Championship and the Open Tournament—featuring international competitors—organized by the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation, at Arugam Bay from the 10th to the 12th of this month.

In addition to the national surfing competitions, events have been organized for the Open Men’s and Women’s categories, as well as Junior categories for the Under-18 and Under-15 age groups. Approximately 50 athletes from 12 countries are participating in the National Open Surfing Championship, while around 100 of the country’s top local athletes are taking part in the national competition.

Officials from the federation announced at a press conference in Colombo yesterday that the deadline for registration for the National Surfing Championship and the Open Tournament is the 8th of this month.

Lalaka Palliyaguruge, Treasurer and Media Spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation, stated that surfing competitions are held on the southern coast between November and April, while events in Arugam Bay take place from April to October.

Samantha Nanayakkara, Vice President of the Sri Lanka Surfing Federation, stated that plans are being considered to host several international-level surfing competitions in the near future with the aim of promoting the sports tourism sector.

At the tournament held earlier this year at Hikkaduwa’s ‘Main Point’, athletes from numerous countries—including Australia, Russia, England, Germany, and Switzerland—competed neck-and-neck with Sri Lankan competitors and secured victories.
