India ended Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka strongly, reaching 288/2 in 73 overs after choosing to bat first at Galle.
Devdutt Padikkal was the star of the day, remaining unbeaten on 131 from 178 balls. Rishabh Pant was also not out on 27.
KL Rahul made a valuable 77 before retiring hurt after a strong second wicket partnership with Padikkal. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 32, while Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva was among the bowlers who struggled to contain India.
Prabath Jayasuriya was Sri Lanka’s only wicket-taker, dismissing Shubman Gill for 16.
India will resume on 288/2, with Padikkal and Pant at the crease.
