Sri Lanka were forced to settle for a 57–57 draw against hosts Hong Kong in a dramatic opening encounter of the Asian Netball Championship, leaving the defending Asian champions with a strong sense of what might have been after surrendering several opportunities to claim victory.
The tournament, which is also serving as the Asian qualifying event for the 2027 Netball World Cup, is being held in Hong Kong from August 8 to 15, with six teams competing for two places at the World Cup.
Sri Lanka entered the contest knowing the importance of making a strong start, but the opening quarter immediately highlighted how closely matched the two sides were. Hong Kong edged the first quarter 13–11, with the hosts making the most of their early possession while Sri Lanka struggled to convert some of their opportunities.
Sri Lanka responded strongly in the second quarter, matching Hong Kong goal for goal as both teams scored 16 points. The 29–27 halftime score kept Sri Lanka firmly within touching distance and provided the platform for a second-half surge.
That surge arrived in the third quarter.
Sri Lanka produced their best spell of the match, outscoring Hong Kong 16–14 to reduce the deficit and move into the final quarter with the momentum firmly on their side. At that stage, victory appeared within reach. The Sri Lankan defence was able to disrupt the hosts’ attacking rhythm, while the attacking unit created enough opportunities to potentially take control of the contest.
However, it was in the decisive final quarter that Sri Lanka allowed a golden opportunity to slip away.
Hong Kong responded with a 16–12 final quarter, overturning Sri Lanka’s advantage and forcing the match into a tense finish. Sri Lanka had chances to put the game beyond Hong Kong, but a series of unforced mistakes, misplaced passes and lapses in concentration prevented them from converting their opportunities when it mattered most.
The final 57–57 scoreline therefore felt more like two points lost than one point gained for Sri Lanka.
The draw was particularly frustrating because Sri Lanka had demonstrated throughout the match that they were capable of beating the hosts. Their ability to recover from the first-quarter deficit, match Hong Kong in the second period and then win the third quarter showed that the team possessed both the skill and determination to challenge the home side.
But against an experienced Hong Kong outfit, small errors proved costly. At crucial moments, Sri Lanka failed to maintain possession and lacked the composure needed to close out the contest. The final quarter exposed those weaknesses, as Hong Kong capitalised on Sri Lanka’s mistakes and fought their way back into contention.
Sri Lanka, six-time Asian champions and among Asia’s leading netball nations, will therefore view the draw as a missed opportunity rather than a satisfactory result.
The result, however, also provides a valuable warning for the remainder of the championship. Sri Lanka have shown they can match the strongest teams in the competition, but if they are to reclaim the Asian crown and secure a place at the 2027 World Cup, they must eliminate the costly mistakes that prevented them from turning a promising performance into a memorable opening victory.
Against Hong Kong, the opportunity was there. Sri Lanka simply failed to seize it.
