Sri Lanka will face defending champions Singapore in their second group match of the 2026 Asian Netball Championship today, with the Lankan side looking to turn a hard-fought opening draw into a positive result at the Kai Tak Arena in Hong Kong.
The tournament, which runs from August 8 to 15, brings together Asia’s leading netball nations, with the championship title and qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney at stake.
Sri Lanka opened their campaign against hosts Hong Kong yesterday and were forced to settle for a 57-57 draw after a dramatic contest. The result will nevertheless provide confidence to the six-time Asian champions, who showed considerable fighting spirit to remain in contention until the final whistle.
The quarter-by-quarter scores reflected just how closely contested the match was, with Hong Kong leading 13-11 after the opening quarter before the teams went into half-time level at 29-29. Sri Lanka then edged ahead during the third quarter, but the hosts fought back strongly in the final period to secure a share of the points.
The draw, however, will also leave Sri Lanka reflecting on a missed opportunity. Having held the hosts under pressure for long periods, the Lankan side had chances to take control of the match but were unable to make the most of crucial opportunities. Against Singapore, they will know that such lapses could prove costly.
Singapore, meanwhile, began their campaign with a victory over the Maldives and will enter today’s contest with considerable confidence. The Singaporeans are among the strongest teams in Asian netball and are the defending champions, making them one of Sri Lanka’s most significant challenges in the group stage.
For Sri Lanka, the key will be to maintain the intensity and discipline displayed against Hong Kong while improving their execution in attack. Greater accuracy under pressure, quicker movement of the ball and better decision-making in crucial moments will be essential if they are to overcome Singapore.
The Lankan defence will also face a stern examination against a Singapore side accustomed to playing at the highest level in the region. Sri Lanka’s ability to disrupt Singapore’s attacking rhythm and force errors could play a major role in determining the outcome.
The match is scheduled for 5.00 p.m. today, with Sri Lanka aiming to produce a more complete performance and secure their first victory of the championship.
After narrowly escaping defeat against Hong Kong, Sri Lanka now have an opportunity to make a strong statement against the defending champions. A victory over Singapore would significantly strengthen their position in the group and provide valuable momentum as they continue their quest to reclaim the Asian netball crown.
