The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee is set to appoint Kusal Mendis as the captain of the Sri Lankan team for the ODI and T20 series against the West Indies starting on the 3rd of next month. Accordingly, Charith Asalanka, who has been the captain of the ODI team so far, and Dasun Shanaka, who has been the captain of the T20 team, will step down from their positions, and the selection committee expects to hand over the captaincy of the Test team to Dhananjaya de Silva
Mendis led the team as Sri Lanka's white-ball captain in 2023, after which Asalanka took over the leadership of Sri Lankan cricket. The selection committee handed over the responsibility of leading the T20 team to Dasun Shanaka ahead of the recently concluded World Cup.
Kusal Mendis, who represented Peshawar Zalmi, which won the Pakistan Super League cricket tournament that concluded a few days ago, managed to score 550 runs in 11 innings in that tournament, scoring a century and 4 half-centuries.
Since January last year, Kusal Mendis has played 16 ODIs, scoring 639 runs, including 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. Since January 2025, Kusal Mendis has played 29 T20Is, scoring 724 runs, including 5 half-centuries.
The 31-year-old Kusal Mendis has emerged as one of Sri Lanka's most reliable batsmen in all three formats. Mendis has scored 4,757 runs in 73 Tests with 10 centuries and 22 half-centuries, and 4,890 runs in 154 ODIs with 6 centuries and 35 half-centuries. In the Twenty20 format, he has scored 2,622 runs in 106 matches with 20 half-centuries.
