Akalanka Peiris achieved his personal best and renewed the national record in the Men’s 50m Backstroke, with a timing of 26.15 seconds but an overall place of 21, close for a top 16 in the Semi Finals.
Weightlifting saw a lot of heartbreak for as many as 3 athletes missed their chances for a number of reasons. 2018 Silver Medalist Indika Dissanayake failed to record a successful attempt in the Clean and Jerk, going past his personal best to pursue for a Bronze medal. Chathuranga Lakmal, a 2018 Bronze medalist, finished 5th in the 67kg category.
Both All Round Finalists in Gymnastics came short in their events. Ruchira Fernando finished on 16th place while Milka Gehani had to retire after 2 events but didn’t give up in the Uneven Bars after falling down in her first attempt.
Chanithma Sinaly beat Naomi Phatsima of Botswana 3-0 in the Plate Round of 16. In Badminton, the Mixed Team lost to Malaysia 3-0 in the Quarterfinals.
Rugby 7’s saw Sri Lanka beat Zambia 27-14 and a close defeat of 26-24 to Jamaica in the 13th Place Play Off. The final conversion to draw the match and go into extra time was missed. The Women’s team finished in last place after their loss against South Africa.
Beach Volleyball saw the Men’s and Women’s teams lose 2-0 to Australia and Canada respectively. In 3X3 Basketball, the Men’s team fought in their match against Canada 21-8 while the Women’s team succumbed to a 21-2 defeat to Australia.
Day 4 will commence today at 2PM with Judo and Boxing to take centre stage. Commonwealth Games legend Chinthana Vidanage in his final appearance at the 81kg weightlifting. At 40, he is the oldest weightlifter in this edition.
