The Sri Lankan team departed yesterday to participate in the World Athletics U20 Championships, which begin tomorrow (5) in Oregon, USA.
Seventeen athletes are representing Sri Lanka at this tournament—the 21st edition of the event—which is scheduled to conclude next Sunday (9).
This marks the largest squad to represent Sri Lanka in the history of the Youth World Championships; for comparison, 12 athletes represented the country at the most recent tournament held in 2024. The current squad comprises 14 male and three female athletes.
Sri Lanka has not won a medal in the 20 editions of the games held to date; however, Prasanna Kumara Aluvihare, the team manager accompanying the squad, expressed confidence that the team would be able to change that history this time around.
He also noted that the 400m relay team joining this squad currently ranks third in the world based on their timings.
The squad includes Tharushi Abhisheka, Dilanma Ransini Perera, Tharusha Mendis, Nethsara Dineth, and Sadew Rajakaruna—all of whom won medals at this year’s Under-20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong.
