LOS ANGELES, July 10 — Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after edging Belgium 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final at Los Angeles Stadium, with substitute Mikel Merino striking a dramatic late winner to end Belgium’s spirited resistance.
The reigning European champions dominated possession from the opening whistle, showcasing their trademark passing football led by the creativity of Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Rodri. Their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz reacted quickest to a rebound after Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had denied Olmo’s initial effort, giving Spain a deserved 1-0 lead.

Substitute Mikel Merino, once again proving his reputation as a big-match player, capitalized on a rebound after replacement goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold a powerful effort. Merino calmly slotted home from close range to send the Spanish bench into celebration and put La Roja within touching distance of another World Cup final four.
Belgium threw everything forward in the closing moments, but Spain’s disciplined defence stood firm to secure a memorable victory. The result extends Spain’s impressive unbeaten run and sends them into a mouthwatering semi-final clash against France, while Belgium’s courageous World Cup campaign comes to an end after a performance full of determination and resilience.
