Argentina completed a stunning comeback to beat Egypt in the World Cup round of 16 and advance to the quarterfinals, scoring three goals after the 79th minute to win 3-2.
Egypt took the advantage defending champions with a goal in the first half and then pushed their advantage to 2-0 with another score in the 67th minute – minutes after the Pharaohs had a goal controversially overturned.
But Argentina’s comeback was on. Cristian Romero scored in the 79th minute and then Lionel Messi equalized a few minutes later, extending his World Cup record with the 21st goal of his career.
Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in the 92nd minute with a header, sending the crowd in Atlanta into a frenzy.
“Leo (Messi) keeps showing what a great legend he is, and we’re happy to be able to be with him,” Argentina striker Julian Alvarez told reporters. “I’m not usually someone who gets emotional, but today I felt it deeply.”T
Argentina will face Switzerland or Colombia in the quarterfinals in Kansas City on Saturday, July 11.
