By Hishan Welmilla

Australia made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group D opener at BC Place in Vancouver. The Socceroos produced a disciplined and clinical performance to secure three valuable points against a highly-rated Turkish side.

Nestory Irankunda broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack to give Australia a deserved lead. Turkey enjoyed the majority of possession but struggled to penetrate Australia’s organized defense, with Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess leading a resolute backline.

As Turkey pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Australia struck again in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe fired home a superb effort from outside the penalty area, sealing a memorable victory for Tony Popovic’s men. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach also played a crucial role with a series of important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The result places Australia in a strong position in Group D and boosts their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages. Turkey, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next group match after a frustrating return to the World Cup stage.

Final Score: Australia 2-0 Turkey
Goals: Irankunda 27′, Metcalfe 75′
