The Sri Lanka Football Federation has decided to award a bonus of Rs. 5 million to the Sri Lankan football team for defeating Bhutan in the FIFA friendly football match. The bonus amount will be distributed among 23 players and ten staff officials including the coach, Sri Lanka Football Federation President Jaswar Umar has told a local newspaper
Sri Lankan players, who have beaten 20 teams in the world in a short span of 2 years, managed to reach 187th place in the latest FIFA world football rankings yesterday with a remarkable 4-1 win over Bhutan. It is noteworthy that while Sri Lanka has moved up 4 places, the defeated Bhutan has dropped 6 places.
This is a remarkable moment for Sri Lanka to reach the top of the world football rankings after 11 years, while in 2024 the Sri Lankan team had fallen to 207th place in the world rankings.
The Sri Lankan football team was ranked 191st in 2015, and in 1998 the national football team was ranked 122nd in the world football rankings, so the Football Federation's plan is to restore such a position.
Qatari national football coach Abdullah Almutairi said that three of Sri Lanka's strongest players did not participate in the match against Bhutan yesterday.
After the match, Almutairi said that considering the way Sri Lanka played against Bhutan yesterday, winning the South Asian Football Championship would not have been difficult.
"All the players in the Sri Lankan team are playing with very good communication. The forward line as well as the defense line worked well. It must be said that the Bhutan team also gave a good fight. They have a good midfield. However, the Sri Lankan team was always ahead," said coach Abdullah Almuteiri.
