The Commonwealth Chess Championship begins

Marking a significant milestone in the world chess scene, the 2026 Commonwealth Chess Championship kicked off with great fanfare yesterday (17) at the Citrus Hotel in Waskaduwa.

Over 250 foreign players and nearly 300 Sri Lankan players representing 14 Commonwealth countries are participating in the event.
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage, President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich, and Bharat Singh Chawla, a renowned leader in the global chess scene, as well as local and foreign guests and officials.
