After a long rugby season, the Sri Lankan team selected for the first match against New Zealand has been somewhat weakened due to several physical injuries suffered by several players. The squad named for the first match includes 26 players, but Shamika Kaushan and Omalka Gunaratne are both suffering from injuries.
The injuries to Heshan Jansen and Dinal Ekanayake of Kandy Sports Club are the biggest setback for Sri Lanka against New Zealand. Dinal Ekanayake suffered a knee injury in last week's match against Malaysian rugby team Johor Tigers. As a result, Dinal Ekanayake has been advised by doctors to be out of action for about a month.
Several other players are focusing more on rugby sevens. They are preparing for the Asian Sevens Championship as well as the Asian Games in Japan.
The first match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the under-85kg category will be held on the 25th of this month at 7.00 pm at the Sports Ministry Stadium (Old Racecourse Ground), Colombo. The second match will be held on the 3rd of May at 4.00 pm at the Nittawela Stadium.
