In a heartwarming gesture of support for school sports, a group of former students from Thurstan College—known as the 91 Thurstanites—donated a full rugby kit to girls’ rugby team of Amithirigala Vidyalaya, encouraging the spirit of rugby among rural youth.
The donation included jerseys, shorts, socks, boots, and other essential equipment aimed at giving the young players of Amithirigala Vidyalaya an equal opportunity to engage in the sport. The presentation took place at a well-known sports goods outlet in Sri Lanka where students expressed their appreciation with a heartfelt welcome and a short exhibition game.
The initiative was spearheaded by the 1991 batch of Thurstan College alumni, who continue to play an active role in promoting education, sports, and youth development in underprivileged areas.
“This is not just about donating gear—it’s about inspiring the next generation and giving them the confidence to compete, learn teamwork, and aim higher,” said a representative from the 91 Thurstanites during the presentation.

Amithirigala Vidyalaya, located in a semi-rural area in Awissawella has shown increasing interest in rugby despite limited resources. With this generous donation, the school aims to build a stronger rugby culture and possibly compete at higher levels in the future.
This act of generosity serves as a reminder of the positive impact that old boys’ networks and community involvement can have on nurturing young talent across Sri Lanka.
