SLC to host intra-squad tourney ahead of T20 WC

With no upcoming international assignments prior to this year’s T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka Cricket plans to host a three-team intra-squad tournament to provide the necessary match practice for the team heading to the World Cup.
The Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 2 to 29 in the USA and West Indies. Sri Lanka, the champions of the 2014 edition, engaged in six T20 internationals, three against both Afghanistan and Bangladesh, marking the team’s final international fixtures before the World Cup.

“Even though we have resumed training with a focus on the World Cup, we face a significant disadvantage due to the absence of international assignments over the next eight weeks. To ensure they are adequately prepared, we have opted to arrange a three-team tournament, guaranteeing each team a minimum of four matches,” stated Chief Selector Upul Tharanga.

This tournament is set to occur in the first week of May, allowing ample time to finalise the 15-man squad for the World Cup.

“We possess a strong T20 team. However, maintaining the fitness of our fast bowlers for the tournament is crucial, and if we can field our best team, we stand a great chance this year,” he remarked.

Since their 2014 victory, Sri Lanka has struggled to reach the semi-finals in recent editions of the tournament.
