SSC and Police joint champs of Major Clubs League

SSC and Police SC declared as joint champions at the Major clubs league Cricket tournament after four day final game which washed out at NCC grounds yesterday.

Only first day was possible to play as SSC were 253 for 3 wickets while rest of the three days were not able to play a single ball and match referee Graeme Labrooy and on field umpires Chamara de Soyza and Ravindra Kottachchi officially called off the game yesterday evening and Sri Lanka Cricket conducted the awards ceremony at NCC grounds .

Avishka Fernando of SSC who hit a superb century at the final on first day was named man of the final while experienced leg spinner Malinda Pushpakumara of Police SC and Lahiru Udara of NCC were named best bowler and best batsman of the tournament.Ravindu Fernando of Tamil Union was adjudged the player of the tournament.

Police SC skipper Ashen Bandara and NCC skipper Nipun Dhananjaya received champions trophy from SLC Head of cricket development Kamal Dharmasiri at the awards ceremony. Ravindu Fernando the promising all rounder said his performance paved the way to get this award while his ambition is to enter the National team very soon. I started cricket from Maris Stella College and my all school coaches gave me good support and lafter leaving school I played for Bloomfield and later crossed over to Tamil Union upto date. Ruwan Kalpage, Sachith Pathirana and Muthumudalige Pushpakumara backed me as Tamil Union coaches he said.

Police SC skipper Ashen Bandara said this is historic occasion as a champions for the first time and I am happy to give leadership for Police SC. My coach Chamara Silva’s guidance helpful to go forward. Our team has only Kusal Janith Perera and Nuwan Pradeep as senior players. However our players had good commitment to get success.

SSC skipper young Nipun Dhananjaya said as acting skipper I had big challenge without our National players but others realised their responsibility to get success. Our coach Saman Jayantha always with us while last moment Avishka Fernando once again entered the team from Abudhabi T-10 played heroic innings. As a former National under 19 and St Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa player I did not have any pressure.
