CH and FC beat Havelocks in a thriller

CH and FC came up with a fine performance to beat the more-fancied Havelocks Sports Club by 20 points (2 goals, 2 penalties) to 13 (2 tries, 1 penalty) in their Nippon Paint A Division League Rugby match played in wet conditions under floodlights at Havelock Park, yesterday. The visitors opened scoring in the 35th minute, when flanker Gihan Madushanka broke away from a line out to score under the posts. Full-back Hirusha Nethmina added the extra points and CH led 7-0 at the breather. Soon after resumption, Havelocks reduced the deficit when pull-back Samuel Maduwantha put over a 25-metre penalty but a few minutes later, CH increased their lead when Hirusha Nethmina made no mistake with a 40-metre penalty to make it 10-3.

In the 71st minute, the Park Club, scored an unconverted try through prop-forward Janindu Fernando but CH went further ahead when fly-half Dinesh Lakshan made an interception and scored under the posts to give Nethmina an easy kick at goal and the score read 17-8.

A few minutes later, Nethmina fired across a 40-metre penalty to make it 20-8. Two minutes before the final whistle Havelocks scored an consolation try through Chanaka Chandimal and the score read 20-13 in favour of CH at the final whistle.
