Sri Lanka is set to send a team of swimmers to the World Aquatic Championship, but there’s a bit of a problem in the selection process. Initially, they were eligible to send two female and two male swimmers. However, two female swimmers have the same FINA points.
Ganga Seneviratne, with the highest FINA points of 696 in the 100m backstroke, is already selected. Now, for the second female slot, both Hiruki de Silva and Anne Venturi, who trains in the USA, have the same FINA points. Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) is considering requesting World Aquatics for permission to send three female swimmers instead of the originally allocated two.
On the male side, Matthew Abeysinghe has already qualified with the highest FINA points of 800 in the 100m freestyle. Akalanka Peiris, with the second-highest FINA points in 50m backstroke, is also a potential candidate. However, SLASU is facing a dilemma as only one male swimmer will be eligible for the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024, and the 50m backstroke is not an Olympic event. Kyle Abeysinghe has the third-highest FINA points among male swimmers.
While Matthew Abeysinghe and Ganga Seneviratne are already qualified. The final selection for the remaining two swimmers (one male and one female) is pending. SLASU is awaiting a decision from the world governing body before confirming the complete team for the 2024 World Aquatic Championship, scheduled from February 2 to 18, 2024, in Doha.
