Ananda College unveils top-tier Boxing facility

Ananda College proudly opened its doors to a brand-new Boxing Ring. The inauguration ceremony was led by Dian Gomes, President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Association, and attended by Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne in a historic event held yesterday. This marks a significant step for Ananda College, known for producing two Olympic boxers in the past.

The state-of-the-art Boxing Ring reflects Ananda College’s commitment to fostering boxing talent and producing future champions for the nation. Dian Gomes, also the Sri Lanka Boxing Chief, played a pivotal role in providing this essential facility, envisioning a resurgence of boxing excellence from the college. “Siblings CP Jayasuriya and HP Jayasuriya, who represented Ananda College in two Olympics, serve as an inspiration for the promising future we envision in boxing from the college,” remarked Dian Gomes, emphasizing the potential for new champions to emerge.

In collaboration with the International Boxing Association (IBA), gloves have been generously offered for the school’s use. General Kamal Gunaratne, a Ananda College alumnus and war hero, has gone a step further by deploying an Army Coach to guide and train aspiring boxers.

“We are actively scouting for the next school boxing prodigy, hoping to replicate the success of HP Jayasuriya and CP Jayasuriya,” stated Gomes, highlighting the commitment to nurturing and developing boxing talent within Ananda College.

Dian Gomes has already demonstrated his dedication to the sport’s growth by personally funding 10 boxing rings for various schools across Sri Lanka, including institutions like S Thomas’ College and Trinity College.

As Ananda College opens this new chapter in its sports legacy, the Boxing Ring stands as a symbol of opportunity, providing a platform for the emergence of future boxing stars who will carry the legacy of Ananda College onto national and international stages.
