Eighth annual Royal – Thomian Regatta today, tomorrow

The 8th annual sailing showdown between Royal College and S Thomas’ College, known as the Ranil Dias Memorial Sailing Regatta, is all set to take place on October 4 and 5. The event will be hosted at the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club on the serene Bolgoda Lake in Moratuwa.

The Royal-Thomian Sailing Regatta will feature six races in two boat categories: Optimists (for those under 16) and Lasers (for those under 20). The competition includes both individual races and team races, adding excitement to the event. A special mention goes to the Junior Under-16 Trophy, named in honor of the late Jereme Bolling, a passionate sailor.

In the previous edition of this competition, held after a two-year hiatus, S Thomas’ College emerged victorious over Royal College in a thrilling contest.

As it stands, the Thomians have the upper hand, leading in the historical tally with six wins out of the seven past encounters. The Royalists secured their victory in the 2018 competition, and the 2021 event was not held due to the pandemic.

This annual event holds special significance as it involves two schools that were pioneers in introducing sailing to the country. Furthermore, the current captains of the respective teams have been representing their alma maters since the regatta’s inception in 2013.
