Sri Lanka’s rising swimming star, Minagi Rupesinghe, made waves at the 9th World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championship in Netanya, Israel, as she shattered a national record in the Women’s 800m Freestyle event on the third day of competition. This international swimming spectacle has attracted 600 swimmers from 200 National Federations worldwide.
Eighteen-year-old Rupesinghe, who already holds the Sri Lankan national record in the 1500m
Freestyle, delivered an outstanding performance in the 800m Freestyle, clocking an impressive time of 9 minutes and 37.56 seconds. Her remarkable achievement erased the previous national record of 9:48.62, which had been held by Ishani Senanayake since the 2016 South Asian Games in India.
This stunning performance marks a significant improvement for Rupesinghe, who surpassed her
previous personal best time of 10 minutes and 18.92 seconds recorded in the previous edition of the championship.
The gold medal in the Women’s 800m Freestyle event was claimed by the fifteen-year-old sensation from the United States, Kayla Han, who completed the race in a remarkable time of 8 minutes and 29.66 seconds. China’s Yihan Mao, at just 14 years old, secured the silver medal with a time of 8 minutes and 33.66 seconds. Argentina’s Agostina Hein, aged 15, secured the third Bronze medal with a timing of 8 minutes and 33.90 seconds.
Former Killer Whale Aquatics’ swimmer Rupesinghe’s journey to this remarkable achievement has seen her undergo rigorous training, including a year-long stint with the Wycombe District Swimming Club in the United Kingdom. Her dedication and hard work have certainly paid off, and she now stands as a promising talent on the international swimming stage.
