In a stunning display of skill, St. Peter’s College’s IM Haathim shattered a long-standing 100m Butterfly record on the opening day of the MILO sponsored 48th Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championships held at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool. The championship kicked off with a thrilling start yesterday, showcasing 5,000 young talents from 200 schools across the nation.
Competing in the Boys Under-14 100m Butterfly finals, Haathim not only secured victory but also etched his name in history by clocking an impressive time of 1:02.89. This achievement obliterated the previous 28-year-old record of 1:03.17, which was held by Gihan Ranathunga of St. Thomas’ College since 1995.
Another record-breaking performance graced the pool as DY Malawara Arachchi of S. Thomas’ College delivered a standout swim in the Boys Under-14 400m freestyle final. Arachchi finished the race in a record-breaking time of 4:49.98, erasing the previous mark of 4:50.36 set by Amjad Hasan in 2016.
The opening day of the five-day meet, also witnessed the dominance of St. Joseph’s College, the reigning Boys School Champion, who has maintained an unbroken 17-year streak of victories. The team surged to the top of the leaderboard with a commanding 82 points. Both S. Thomas’ College and St. Peter’s College shared the second position with 31 points each, followed closely by Royal College with 28 points. On the girls’ side, defending champions Visakha Vidyalaya showcased their prowess by securing the top spot in the standings with 27 points.
Panadura Lyceum International School held a strong second place with 24 points, closely trailed by Wattala Lyceum School in third place with 23 points.
