Sri Lanka advance to Junior Davis Cup semis

Sri Lanka powered their way into the semi-finals of the ITF World Junior Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup Tennis Tournaments, continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

In the Boys’ Tournament, Sri Lanka defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in the quarter-finals with Methwan Wijemanne overcoming Albiar Orozmatov in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the opening Singles tie.

Thereafter, Sandas Usgodaarachchi had the better of Islambek Almazbekov 6-1, 6-1 in the second Singles match while Usgodaarachci joined Danushka Dias and the pair defeated the combination of Islambek Almazbekov and Albiar Orozmatov 4-1, 4-0 in the Doubles encounter.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Girls’ Team also secured their place in the semi-finals after defeating the Maldives 2-1 in the quarter-final fixture.

Dinara de Silva gave Sri Lanka the perfect start by defeating Aaraa Azim in the opening Singles while Inuki Jayaweera made it 2-0 for the home side by outplaying Nayara Ali 6-2, 6-0.

However, Maldives had the consolation of winning the Doubles encounter as their pair of Lulua Areef and Aaraa Azim beat the pair of Dinara de Silva and Ruvi Lewkebandara 2-4, 2-4, 5-3.
