Suresh Dharmasena bags Sri Lanka Open Wheelchair Tennis Title

Suresh Dharmasena came from behind with a tremendous performance to win the Men’s Singles title at the Sri Lanka Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, which continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

The Asian Para Games Bronze Medallist and the top seed continued his excellent form in this format and went on to beat his rival Sung Bong Han from South Korea in an exciting final encounter.

Dharmasena made a disappointing start to the all-important final as he conceded the opening set 1-6 to his opponent but recovered magnificently to clinch the second set 6-4 and the third and final set 6-3 after a gruelling battle.

This event, with prize money of US $3,000 is part of a series of international wheelchair tennis tournaments, which will be hosted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) in February.

Dharmasena will now look to extend his dominance when the second event of the series begins on Friday at the Negombo Tennis Club Courts, which will be followed by the third event of the series from February 15 at the same venue.

The Sri Lankan Wheelchair Tennis Team is coached by Ignatius Vijayakanth and is overlooked by Major General Shiran Abeysekera.

Men’s Singles (final): Suresh Dharmasena (Sri Lanka) beat Sung Bong Han (South Korea) 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
