The eight-member Sri Lanka Men’s and Women’s Junior Squash Teams left for India yesterday to participate in the 21st Asian Junior Squash Team Championship, which begins in Chennai today.
The Sri Lanka Junior Men’s Team will have to battle it out with Pakistan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Kuwait in the preliminary round stage while the Sri Lanka Women’s Team will face Hong Kong, India and Singapore in the league stage.
The Sri Lanka Men’s Team finished sixth and the Sri Lanka Women’s Team placed fifth at the previous tournament held in South Korea last year. This time, the Sri Lanka Junior Men’s Team will be represented by Nevindu Lakman, Thinuara Randina, Seniya Jayathilaka and Sehath Perera while Chanithma Sinaly, Anargi Perera, Ranliya Wood and Adithi Gunasekara will represent the Sri Lanka Junior Women’s Team.
In fact, Women’s national champion Sinaly from Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya and the experienced Anargi Perera from Visakha Vidyalaya are the key players in the Girls’ Team. Current junior national champion Lakman from D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo who did well to qualify for the semi-finals of the Singapore Junior Open and HCL Indian Junior Open, will no doubt be the key player.
Thinura Randina from Nalanda College, Seniya Jayathilaka and Sehath Perera from Royal College are the other members of the Men’s Team, who can turn things around.
National Coaches Gihan Suwaris, and Naduni Gunawardena will oversee the teams from the coaching department. Both Suwaris and Gunawardena are former number one ranked players and World Squash Federation Level-3 qualified coaches.
