Mrs. Dagmar Woehrl enjoyed a memorable debut as an owner, winning three out of four races, at the RTC #Visitsrilanka Raceday on January 15th at the Racecourse in Nuwara Eliya. Failing short comprehensively only to firm favourite, Mauritania in the main event, the Class I race for the Hill Rise Nuwara Eliya Trophy, Mrs. Woehrl claimed the remaining three races to complete a dream debut at the picturesque racecourse.
Mauritania made a start-to-finish run to claim the 1400 metre race, giving Edwards Stables their only win, with jockey L. Ravi Kumar up. Mrs. Woehrl’s Royal Crystal, with jockey P. Dinesh up, closed in halfway through, but Mauritania was a hard contender to beat.
The first race of the day, the Class II race for the Thambili House Galle Fort Trophy, was claimed by Legendary Princess, ridden by jockey S. Niranjan. Santos, owned by Edwards Stables and ridden by jockey P. Dinesh, finished in close second.
Jockey L. Ravi Kumar claimed his second win of the day, also giving Mrs. Woehrl her second win, when Crack of Dawn made a thrilling run to own the Sandals Balapitiya Trophy. Godsword owned by Mr. S.N. Harish and ridden by jockey P. Dinesh, almost claimed the win of the Class IV race with a distance of 1070 metres, but Crack of Dawn held on to complete a deserving win.
Mystic Flame, ridden by jockey P. Dinesh, completed Mrs. Woehrl’s hat-trick, winning the Hermitage Kandy Trophy, a Class IV race with a distance of 1400 metres. Cosmic Feeling, owned by S.L.N. Infrastructures and ridden by jockey L. Ravi Kumar, finished in close second.
The raceday, sponsored by Edwards Collection Luxury Boutique Villas, was well attended with the day being a Sunday and the Thai Pongal holiday. The RTC #Visitsrilanka Raceday was the inaugural event of the RTC #Visitsrilanka Horseracing Season 2023, which consist of five racedays
