Day 3 of the 2nd test commenced at Galle under a supportive weather condition. The destructive West Indies confidently started day 3 on 113/1 and conquered the pitch until lunch where the captain’s beautiful 72 contributed to keep the game going.
He was supported by Blackwood going for 44 and Bonner,35. The Caribbeans held forth until the advent of Mendis who collapsed their confidence marking a 5 wicket haul-supported by Embuldeniya and Jayawickrama which lead to a swift elimination of the visitors with a blink of an eye-giving an end to the West Indies 1st innings -253 for all out. Ramesh Mendis’s performance of taking 6 wickets at the end of the innings was very noteworthy.
After a while, Sri Lanka initiated with their 2nd innings-opened by the versatile captain Dimuth Karunaratne and the young opener Pathum Nissanka. Unfortunately, the captain was the first to get knocked off for a run out with a score of just 1 run. Oshada Fernando too endured the fate of the skipper-another run out. Pathum Nissanka held strong for 21* along with Charith Asalanka who just recieved his test cap.
At the end of the day 3 stumps Sri Lanka are 46/2 trailing the Carribeans by 3 runs. Despire the captain’s unfortunate departure, the debutant Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka will need to handle the batting department along with the powerful strikers for tomorrow’s session.
