The 23 member squad for the South Asian Football Championship to be held in the Maldives on the 1st of next month was officially announced on Monday (27)
The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) recently named a 29-man squad for the first round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The team was then sent to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for special training.
The Sri Lankan players participated in a special training match with a sports club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and won the match 6-1.
Sujan Perera has been named captain of the Sri Lanka squad for the tournament, with Kaveesh Fernando and Ruwan Arunasiri joining him as goalkeepers.
Mohamed Hasmeer, who was in the squad, has failed to qualify and Danushka Rajapaksa and Dilip Peiris have been ruled out of the final squad due to injuries.
Danushka Rajapaksa and Afeel Mohamed have also been dropped from the squad. Nuwan Gimhana, a young goalkeeper, has not been included in the squad, but he has joined the Under-23 national squad.
Up Country Lions player Mohamed Shifan has opened the doors of the national squad for the first time and former Mawanella United player Shifan also represented the Sri Lanka Under 23 team.
The selectors have also decided to reinstate Edison Figurado, an inexperienced player who was not in the starting squad, back into the Sri Lanka national team after a long break.
The 2021 South Asian Football Championship will be held from October 1 to 16 and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will enter the field on October 1 (Friday).
October 1- Sri Lanka v Bangladesh
October 4 -Sri Lanka v Nepal
October 7 – Sri Lanka v India
October 10 – Sri Lanka – Maldives
