Ranthushka Sasindu and Dilmi Dias emerged open men’s and women’s singles champions at the SSC open Badminton championships which concluded at the SSC Indoor Stadium,
The men’s open singles final between Ranthushka Sasindu and Viren Nettasinghe was a keen tussle in a three setter game.three-setter game. The former Nalandian won the first set 21/12 but 15 year old Viren Nettasinghe from St Peters College Bambalapitiya who qualified for the final for the first time made a good show making 21/17 to win the second set. The third set was very tough from the beginning and at one stage Viren led the set 11/10. However Ranthushka used his experience to win the set 21/18 and ensure the championship.
Meanwhile, Dilmi Dias from Our Lady Victory College Moratuwa won the women’s singles final with defeating bottom seed Hasara Wijeratna 21/10, 21/18 to win the women’s single title while Achini Ratnasiri and Upuli Weerssinghe won the women’s double title. Hasitha Chanaka and R.S Kasun won the men’s double while Maduka Dulanjana and Dilmi Dias won the mixed double title.
