66th Badminton Nationals: Thilini beats Hasini while Viren advances to the final

Viren Nettasinghe from St Peters College, Bambalapitiya advanced to the final of the under 17 boys category at the 66th National Badminton Championship which is now in progress at Royal College sports complex Reid Avenue.

It was keen tussel by Royalist Dumindu Abeywickrama and Viren in a hard fought three setters. Royalist won the first set at him home courts with 21/19 but Viren, the number two player coached by Danesh Malliyawadu, came back strongly to win back to back two sets 21/17, 21/14 to enter the final.

The finals will take place on Friday against  Venura Pelawatte from Ananda College or Chaniru Mirando from Royal Institute who will be battling out in their semis to qualify for the final.

Meanwhile former National players Chandrika de Silva and Nadeesga Gayanthi entered the second round of the women’s open singles. Former National champion Thilini Hendahewa had to make a hard-fought three setter game to beat young Hasini Ambalangodage who was the Youth Olympic Games gold medal winner at the International mixed event recently.

Pyramid Wilmer Pvt Ltd and Yonex Sunrise are the sponsors of this year’s tournament which is organised by Sri Lanka Badminton. The finals of the National Badminton championship will be held on 3rd November. Sport Minister Faizer Mustafa will be the chief guest at the awards ceremony.
