Payal Nag: The Armless and Legless Archer Inspiring India Ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games

From a life-changing childhood accident to the international archery arena, Payal Nag’s remarkable journey is a powerful story of courage, determination and sporting ambition.

Payal Nag, an extraordinary para archer from India, is preparing to represent her country at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games 2026, scheduled to take place in Japan from October 18 to 24. Having lost all four limbs in a childhood electrocution accident, Nag has overcome extraordinary physical challenges to establish herself as one of the most inspiring emerging talents in para archery.

Originally from Balangir in Odisha, Nag refused to allow her disability to define her future. Instead, she discovered a passion for archery and began developing the skills necessary to compete at the highest level of the sport.

With the assistance of a specially designed mechanical device, Nag learned to shoot arrows using her shoulder. Her unconventional technique, combined with intensive practice and determination, has enabled her to compete against able-bodied expectations and experienced para archers alike.

Her breakthrough came in February 2026, when she won silver and bronze medals at the National Para Archery Championships. The results demonstrated her growing potential and strengthened her position as an emerging figure in Indian para archery.

Nag subsequently achieved another significant milestone at the World Archery Para Series in Bangkok, where she defeated India’s celebrated world champion Sheetal Devi to claim a gold medal. The victory attracted attention because of the remarkable circumstances surrounding Nag’s achievement and the level of competition she faced.

Sheetal Devi, herself a prominent para archer, has become an internationally recognised figure in the sport. Defeating such an accomplished opponent marked a significant moment in Nag’s developing career and highlighted the competitive potential of India’s para archery programme.

Now, as the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games approach, Nag faces another major opportunity to demonstrate her abilities on the continental stage. Representing India at a major international multi-sport event would further strengthen her experience and provide a platform to inspire aspiring para athletes.

Her journey from Balangir to international competition is more than a sporting success story. It reflects the importance of accessible sporting opportunities, adaptive equipment and determination in helping athletes overcome barriers.

As India prepares for the 2026 Asian Para Games, Payal Nag will carry the hopes of those who see in her journey a powerful message: physical limitations need not determine the limits of human ambition.
