Galina Basnayake: Sri Lanka’s Golden Wave of Para Swimming

By Hishan Welmilla

When Galina Basnayake dives into the pool, she carries more than the ambition of an athlete. She carries the hopes of a nation, the rewards of years of dedication and the determination to prove that limitations need not define potential.

One of Sri Lanka’s most promising para swimmers, Galina has steadily established herself on the international stage through outstanding performances in the S9 classification. With multiple international medals, a landmark Asian Para Games achievement and appearances at the highest level of world para swimming, she is building a career that reflects courage, discipline and an unrelenting desire to improve.

Galina’s rise to prominence began with a remarkable performance at the 2021 Asian Youth Para Games in Bahrain, where she captured three gold medals in the women’s 50m, 100m and 400m freestyle events in the S9 category. She added a silver medal in the 100m butterfly, announcing herself as a formidable young talent in Asian para swimming.
However, one of the defining moments of her career came at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, in October 2023.

Competing in the women’s 400m freestyle S9 event, Galina produced a superb performance to claim the silver medal in a personal-best time of 5 minutes and 18.28 seconds. Her achievement was particularly significant for Sri Lanka, ending a 13-year wait for a swimming medal at the Asian Para Games.

It was more than a podium finish. It was a breakthrough that reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s potential in international para swimming and placed Galina among the country’s leading athletes in the discipline.

Her performances in Hangzhou demonstrated that she could compete with some of Asia’s best, while providing fresh inspiration to aspiring para athletes across the island.

Galina’s progress has extended beyond regional competition. At the 2024 World Para Swimming Open Water Cup in Sardinia, Italy, she secured a bronze medal in the women’s 3km S7–S10 category, adding another international achievement to her growing collection.
She has also demonstrated her ability to compete beyond the para swimming arena. At the Mount Lavinia Two-mile Sea Swim, she earned recognition as the Best Open Women Para Swimmer, showcasing her endurance and competitive spirit in open-water conditions.

In 2025, Galina continued her international journey at the World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore. Competing against elite swimmers from around the world, she finished ninth in the women’s 400m freestyle S9 event, recording a time of 5:08.47 in the official results.

The result highlighted her continued development and the demanding standards of competition at world championship level.

Behind Galina’s progress is the guidance of renowned Sri Lankan swimmer and coach Julian Bolling, under whose guidance she has trained at Rainbow Aquatics. Bolling’s experience and technical knowledge have played an important role in helping her develop as a competitive swimmer, while Galina’s commitment to training and willingness to challenge herself continue to drive her progress.

Success in para swimming demands far more than physical ability. It requires technical precision, tactical awareness, endurance, mental strength and the discipline to perform consistently under pressure. Galina’s achievements reflect the importance of these qualities in her journey towards international excellence.

Away from competition, Galina is also pursuing her academic studies in psychology at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).
Balancing university life with the demands of high-performance sport requires careful time management, sacrifice and determination. For Galina, the pursuit of academic knowledge alongside sporting excellence represents another dimension of her ambition.

Her journey offers an important message to young athletes: sporting dreams and educational goals need not be mutually exclusive. With the right support, discipline and commitment, both can become part of a meaningful future.

From three gold medals at the Asian Youth Para Games to silver at the Asian Para Games, a world-level open-water bronze and a top-ten finish at the World Championships, Galina Basnayake has already compiled an impressive record for Sri Lanka.
Yet her story is far from complete.

Every international appearance provides another opportunity to refine her technique, improve her times and gain valuable experience against the world’s best. The challenge now is to build on those achievements, maintain consistency and continue closing the gap on the leading swimmers in her classification.

For Sri Lanka, Galina represents the promise of a new generation of para athletes determined to compete with distinction on the global stage. Her achievements also underline the importance of sustained investment, coaching, facilities and institutional support in helping talented athletes reach their full potential.

In the pool, every second matters. Every stroke demands commitment. And every finish line presents a new challenge.

Galina Basnayake has already shown that she possesses the determination to meet those challenges head-on. As her international journey continues, Sri Lanka will watch with pride and anticipation, hoping that the young para swimmer will add further chapters to a story that has already brought honour to the nation.

For Galina, the medals are milestones, not the destination. The next race is another opportunity to make history.
