The second group of Sri Lankan para athletes departed the island yesterday to participate in the 5th Asian Para Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, as the country’s contingent continues its journey towards one of Asia’s premier multi-sport events for athletes with disabilities.

The Sri Lankan contingent is travelling in batches to Japan, with the athletes preparing to compete against some of the region’s best para athletes at the Games, scheduled to take place from October 18 to 24.

The departure of the second group marks another important step in Sri Lanka’s preparations for the continental competition, where the athletes will aim to produce strong performances and bring honour to the country.

Sri Lanka is expected to field athletes across several sporting disciplines, with competitors looking to demonstrate their skills, determination and commitment on the international stage. The Games will provide an opportunity for the country’s para athletes to measure themselves against top-level opposition while gaining valuable experience in a major international competition.

The Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games will bring together thousands of athletes from across Asia, celebrating sporting excellence, resilience and inclusion. The event is also expected to highlight the growing standard of para sport throughout the region.

For Sri Lanka, the competition represents an opportunity to build on its achievements in para sports and showcase the talent and potential of its athletes. The team’s participation also reflects the dedication of the athletes, coaches, officials and support personnel who have contributed to their preparation.

Chef de Mission Brigadier (Retired) Dhanajaya Aludeniya has expressed confidence in the Sri Lankan contingent’s ability to perform well at the Games. He has emphasised the importance of the athletes giving their best and representing the country with pride.

As the remaining members of the contingent prepare to join their teammates in Japan, the Sri Lankan athletes will focus on their final preparations ahead of the opening ceremony and the commencement of competition.

With the Games approaching, the nation will be looking forward to the performances of its para athletes as they take on the challenge of representing Sri Lanka at the highest level of Asian para sport.
