Sri Lanka registered their first victory at the Asian Netball Championship 2026 currently underway in Hong Kong with an impressive 66–52 win over Malaysia, delivering a strong statement performance after a mixed start to the tournament.
The Sri Lankan team showed dominance from the outset, controlling the tempo of the game and capitalizing on their attacking opportunities. They established an early lead by producing a disciplined and energetic display in the opening two quarters, heading into halftime with a comfortable 32–26 advantage.
Their defensive unit played a crucial role in limiting Malaysia’s scoring chances, while the shooters maintained consistency under pressure. The mid-court players also contributed significantly, ensuring smooth transitions and maintaining possession throughout the game.
Sri Lanka further strengthened their grip on the match during the third quarter, where they outplayed Malaysia with a commanding 18–10 scoring run. This decisive phase effectively tilted the contest in Sri Lanka’s favour, as they widened the gap and left Malaysia struggling to recover.
Although Malaysia attempted a late comeback in the final quarter, scoring 17 goals compared to Sri Lanka’s 16, the effort proved insufficient to overturn the deficit. Sri Lanka’s earlier dominance ensured they remained firmly in control and comfortably closed out the match with a 14-goal margin.
This victory comes as a much-needed boost for the Sri Lankan side, who entered the match under pressure following their opening fixtures. They began their campaign with a hard-fought 57–57 draw against hosts Hong Kong, showcasing resilience but missing out on a win. However, they were unable to maintain momentum in their second outing, suffering a 62–51 defeat against Singapore.
