National Netball Team Leaves for Hong Kong Today

The Sri Lanka netball team departs for Hong Kong today to participate in the Asian Netball Championship, which begins on the 8th.

In the preliminary round, the match between Sri Lanka and Hong Kong will be held at the Hong Kong National Sports Complex on the 8th, while the match between Singapore and Sri Lanka is scheduled for the 9th.

It is noteworthy that the Sri Lanka team is participating in the Asian Netball Championship tour, given that the Ministry of Sports has informed the Sri Lanka Netball Federation that it cannot accept the medical reports submitted by the medical unit regarding one of the participating players.

The Ministry of Sports had instructed the Netball Association to refer the athlete to a doctor at the National Hospital to obtain a medical report, in place of the one provided by the medical unit. Despite this, the Sri Lanka Netball Association took steps to include the athlete in the Asian Netball Championship, having also secured the Ministry of Sports’ approval for doing so.

The Sri Lankan team finished as runners-up after losing to Singapore in the final of the 2024 Asian Netball Championship, whereas they had succeeded in winning the title by defeating Singapore in the 2022 tournament.

The Sri Lanka netball squad traveling to the Asian Netball Championship is as follows:

Thisala Algama (Captain), Thilini Wattegedara (Vice-Captain), Dulangi Wannithilaka, Thumalka Ekanayake, Bashi Udagedara, Rashmi Divyanjali Perera, Gayanjali Amarawansha, Neesha Rajaguru, Gayani Dissanayake, Malmi Thilakaratne, Thimi Meyara Wasanthapriya, Anjalika Thilakaratne.
