The primary objective of the project is to identify the most talented javelin throwers from schools, sports clubs, sports academies, and the open category within the Central Province, provide them with scientific training, and facilitate their progression to the national squad. Talent is identified through competitions held across eight categories—covering the Under-16, Under-18, Under-20, and Open age groups for both men and women.
Under the selection process, eight athletes will be chosen for each category—four based on an assessment of physical capabilities and four through specialized technical tests for javelin throwing. Subsequently, a Central Province javelin squad comprising a total of 64 athletes will be established.
The objective of this program, which begins at the provincial level, is to identify outstanding talent at the all-island level and—through national-level camps and specialized training programs—nurture skilled individuals capable of winning international medals for Sri Lanka.
Sumedha Ranasinghe participated in the javelin throw event at the 2016 Olympics, while Vijitha Amarasekara (1992), Nadeeka Lakmali (2008), and Dilhani Lekamge (2024) represented Sri Lanka. Deputy Sports Minister Sugath Thilakaratne pointed out that, consequently, athletes capable of competing at the Olympic level have emerged in the javelin throw event across both men's and women's categories.
