A proud moment for Sri Lankan sports was celebrated in Colombo as Manel Dharmakeerthi was elected as the Secretary General of the South Asian Wushu Federation during the federation’s Annual General Meeting held in Colombo.
Dharmakeerthi, who previously served as the President of the Sri Lanka Wushu Federation, has been widely recognised for his dedicated contribution towards the development and promotion of Wushu in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region. His appointment to one of the top administrative positions in the regional body is seen as a significant achievement for Sri Lankan martial arts.
The AGM brought together officials and representatives from several South Asian countries, with discussions focused on the future development of Wushu, regional tournaments, athlete development programmes, and strengthening cooperation among member nations.
Sports officials in Sri Lanka hailed Dharmakeerthi’s appointment as a major step forward for the country’s presence in international sports administration. Many believe his experience and leadership will help further elevate the standards of Wushu across South Asia while also creating greater opportunities for Sri Lankan athletes at regional and international competitions.
Over the years, Dharmakeerthi has played a key role in organising local and international Wushu events and has worked tirelessly to popularise the sport among young athletes in Sri Lanka. His election is also viewed as recognition of Sri Lanka’s growing influence within the South Asian sporting community.
The South Asian Wushu Federation is expected to announce several new regional initiatives in the coming months under its newly appointed leadership team.
