After losing the series against England, Sri Lanka bounced back strongly by winning their first match of the T20 World Cup.
At the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Ireland won the toss and chose to bowl first. Ireland’s bowlers applied heavy pressure on the Sri Lankan batters during the first 15 overs, and Sri Lanka crossed 100 runs only in the 15.3 over. A brilliant 44 off just 19 balls by Kamindu Mendis, along with an unbeaten 56 from Kusal Mendis, helped Sri Lanka reach 163/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka’s bowlers took control and restricted Ireland to 143, and won by 20 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana led the Sri Lanka bowling attack with three wickets each. Harry Tector scored 40 runs for Ireland.
